Since the mid-twentieth century, Americans have battled over the answer to a seemingly simple question: who rules the school? Parents, educational experts, and government (at the local, state, and federal level) have attempted to assert control over the schools during these years. Using A Nation at Risk, The Prize and our readings on religion, sex, and history in American classrooms as evidence, answer the following question: Who or what has been the dominant force in shaping American education over the past half century? Have local majorities, experts, or elected officials had either too much or too little control over education policy?
