The research behind why an individual decides to become a volunteer firefighter is scarce with very little known for certain about how the choice is decided. The age of younger volunteer firefighters appears to be more self-orientated more so than anything else but with no less thought about community safety. The decline in Australian volunteer firefighters is apparent with many variables coming into play such as employers less inclined to release volunteers to attend fires through to self-employment creating time constraints on volunteering. The current volunteer fire service is ageing with very few younger volunteers picking up the roles and progressing through to leadership roles. The constantly changing trends in younger Australians makes creating recruitment campaigns that target younger members difficult. The survey conducted shows that marketing strategies needed to be adapted to show not ‘only what you can do for us’ but also ‘what we can do for you’ to attract younger members by showing the training and possible career enhancements that come from the volunteer fire service. This approach doubled the enquiries from possible new members with more than half being from the younger generations. This shows that the future campaigns for targeting younger generations needs to address the trend in thought patterns of the target generation at the given time.
