This weeks assignment is a one-page memo. here is the Scenario. You are the assistant to the school superintendent (Dr. Conklin). He has an important meeting with the school board next week and he has to make a report to them. He wants you to do research on the EdisonLearning corporation who wants to open a charter school in our district. This would not be associated with the local school district at all but is an independent for-profit corporation that wants a State charter to open a charter school right in Muscogee County. The State of Georgia requires local school board approval before it will grant a charter to a private corporation to open a charter school. Once the charter is approved they will be able to recruit students from our district and will receive school tax dollars to fund their operations. For every dollar they get from our district we will lose that dollar. They are also able to be paid a higher per diem for each student than we are able to be paid for the same student but it will come from the county taxes. Some important things you might want to consider in your searches: Is the EdisonLearning corporate website the most objective place to locate factual information about them? Is the federal or state government website the best site to locate factual information on Edison? Have you considered newspapers? What about professional organizations such as the NEA, what is their opinion about EdisonLearning? What is the track record for EdisonLearning in states where the have operated? Ex″ Michigan, Massachussetts, California? others? Have they ever had a charter revoked or not renewed? What is their track record in regard to students with special education needs? Their civil rights? Special Education laws? Do they use certified teachers? Do they have to? Have they ever made a profit? Are they finacially sound? Who owns the stock? What is the overall results of charter schools? Do they really do better then public schools? Do they descriminate? After you have completed all of your factual research you must whittle the information down to a one-page memo, no more. You must develop an opinion based upon the facts, not your feelings. Remember this, your work must be in Memo format. What does that mean? No salutations, no greetings, no address, no signature line and lastly no references. It is not a letter and it is not an email.
