- Assigned term paper article: one of the leadership articles in Canvas Module Week 2 is assigned for each student.
- Search for 2 other, peer-reviewed, scholarly articles that relate to the assigned article.
- For each article, this process will help your analysis:
(a) Read the beginning—the first page or two—until you come to something that looks like an argument/argumentative thesis (i.e. the BIG POINT).
(b) Then read the end—the last few pages, looking for a summary. Are they the same? Is one a fuller statement than the other? If they aren’t the same, did you find the right thesis, or has the author flip-flopped?
(c) Then read the article, looking for main points (usually 3-5 main points). Your goal is to divide the article into topics. Skim the first and last sentence of each paragraph, and divide the article into chunks.
(d) Pay attention to words like thus, therefore, as a result, in consequence, because of, etc. These are signals that there is a small summary of the preceding paragraphs!
(e) When you’re done, you should have an outline: Opening thesis, sections A, B, C, and D, and closing thesis or summary. Only then do you start reading in earnest. Always remember to stop and ask yourself: how does this paragraph relate to the key point/thesis of the article?
- Compare and contrast the three articles, including the key argument for each article, the main points, the conceptual definitions of key words, and conclusions.
- At the end of your paper, list your sources in APA style
