Out-Of-School Factors

Think about a student that you have met who might be contending with challenging out-of-school factors. How can you share your concerns in ways that are respectful, maintain confidence, and help circle resources around this family?

I do believe that literature can influence children’s perceptions of the world and the people in it.  I do feel though that there has been much more thought put into making literature today much more inclusive peices of work.  When I think back to when I was young majority of the stories I had heard or read gave the idea that the characters were well off and recieved an abundance of wonderful things for example at Christmas time.  As a child who grew up in a home that was not well off financially by any means, it would make me sad and sometimes wish I had a different life.

Considering some of the children books that I have read to students I would say for the most part they do a good job trying to create a diverse all inclusive message that hopefully makes all students feel welcomed and accepted.

Hello Class,
The quote from the Guide for Selecting Anti-Bias Children’s Books made some vital points about this topic. That’s why I do agree with the quote because literature obtains the information that determines how the child can view the world. It can also alter the child’s attitude toward diversity. The reasoning being children are in the process of developing their form of identity, this makes them very impressionable and vulnerable. That’s why it is necessary to select accurate reading materials that are about them and have illustrations that look like them and reading materials about others that are different from them and have illustrations that are different from them. This will help the child understand themselves, others, and their community, and this understanding will last a lifetime. This will also help the child to embrace diversity and know that all people should be treated with respect, dignity, and fairness. By selecting anti-bias children’s books will help the child recognize inequality and give them a meaningful reason to make a positive change or difference in society.

Respecting learning differences

Students learn differently in the classroom based on their unique cultural differences. An example of this might include an English language learner who is adapting to a new language. What are some steps you can take to competently and respectfully address students’ learning differences that relate to their cultural diversity?

The achievement gap?

After reading the article Culturally Responsive Teaching, what are your thoughts about the achievement gap between white and minority students?

Professor and Class,

First and foremost, this would go against the Model Code of Ethics for Educators, because this teacher is involved as a business promoter. When we take the job as an educator, we take on much responsibility. Educators are role models for their students, which comes with limitations as well as responsibility. If a teacher chooses to be involved in such a promotion, they may be setting themselves up for failure. As the teacher probably doesn’t know the morals of the business and will be criticized if anything were to arise. Although it is nice to have new things every year, it is not a necessity, and it is not suitable for the school/teacher to be involved in the venturing or promotion of a business to achieve benefits of their own. The Code of Ethics was created and put into place for these types of situations.
