· Some businesses have no alternative but to use satellite communication solutions. Give some examples of when you think this would be appropriate and what considerations you need to take into account when choosing a satellite option. How would this affect your need for ATM or your large business WAN operations? You’ll need to know how to deploy your teams and resources to support these networks. Talk about your first thoughts on how you might do this based on what you’ve learned in class so far.
KW’s post states the following:
Good afternoon Everyone,
Examples of when satellite communications would be appropriate & considerations to be made when choosing a satellite option
Satellite communication is particularly useful in remote or isolated areas where traditional communication networks are unable to provide services or are not yet established. Satellite communication technology is often utilized in underdeveloped countries, or particularly remote areas like the Ocean. Organizations with global operations may choose to utilize satellite communication to remain in contact with employees and partners in underdeveloped countries that have little network infrastructure. Ships and aircraft are known to use this satellite communication as well. Key considerations would be the cost of implementation and use, the degree of network management required, the level of security provided, the speed and bandwidth provided by each respective option, and the overall reliability of the system.
How would this affect your need for ATM or your large business WAN operations?
Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) can prove highly beneficial when used over satellite communication networks. Although utilizing satellite networks can solve the issue of high distance communication between devices, its ability to provide broadband communications with QoS guarantees can be limited. ATM has the ability to bolster satellite communication by solving the requirements of QoS guarantees. Satellites are being utilized in packet data transmission more and more frequently and have the ability to provide backbone links to geographically dispersed LAN’s and MAN’s for WAN networks.
You’ll need to know how to deploy your teams and resources to support these networks. Talk about your first thoughts on how you might do this based on what you’ve learned in class so far.
Teams/resources will be required to support multiple aspects of the network. IT support will be required to support users who require technical assistance. Data specialists will be required to manage the data transferred and stored over the network. Additionally, system security will also need to be monitored and managed. Furthermore, maintenance and repair of the hardware and software utilized by the system will also be required.
