Evidence-based practice (EBP) in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) involves the integration of research evidence, clinical expertise, and individual client values and preferences. BCBAs review research evidence to identify effective interventions. Then, combine research evidence with clinical expertise to create and implement interventions. These interventions should align with the client’s values, preferences, and goals. Contreras et al. (2021) discuss ethics in ABA and using EBP when dealing with ethical issues, which was the main takeaway of the article. This can be done by evaluating ethical dilemmas with ethical decision-making and relevant research. The article makes suggestions that align with the BACB Ethics Code and is relevant to the ethical coursework reviewed in this course. BCBAs should know and understand the Ethics Code, use EBPs when analyzing ethical dilemmas, and look at each case while considering the Ethics Code in its entirety before making informed decisions and promoting effective ABA. This idea was another main takeaway from the article. Brodhead et al. (2018) describe the “three-legged stool” analogy to define the characteristics of EBPs. Each leg represents the best available practice, clinical expertise, and client values, preferences, characteristics, and circumstances. This article suggests similar ideas to the Brodhead et al. (2018) readings.
