I have spent an inordinate amount of time trying to figure out the best format for an online midterm in an intensive course. I’ve decided that it has to be writing-based, and should combine some specific material and some extensive reflection. So I’ve written a four prompts for essays of a longer and more conceptual nature than the homework assignments. Choose one of the four prompts and write an essay of about 750 words. Good essays will carefully and thoroughly answer each segment of the prompt, and offer specific support from the course material.

Thus far in this course we’ve been problematizing the concept of ‘civilization.’ What do Strayer and Nelson say about the definition of civilization and the risks of using the term? What does John Green say about the same things? Can you detect ways that Gus Casely-Hayford is comfortable or uncomfortable with the term? What reading or episode do you think best shows the definition of civilization? What reading or documentary shows the risks of using this term?
