Assignment – fairy tales and folk tales

Purpose

Understanding the difference between fairy tales and folktales and knowing their purpose and value in society will provide the background you need to analyze different versions of a fairy tale in the next assignment. 

Directions

  1. Read “Fairy Tale”Preview the document and “Folk TalePreview the document” from the 2016 e-book titled Folktales and Fairy Tales: Traditions and Texts From Around the World, 2nd Edition written by Helen Callow, Donald Haase, and Anne E. Duggan to understand the differences between fairytales and folktales. 
  2. Referring to the reading and to your own thinking, describe the difference between folk and fairy tales in a 1 paragraph writing. Remember to properly cite source ideas within the text of your writing as well as in a work cited. Also, remember that a paragraph at the college level should be 7-12 sentences in length.
  3. Read the first 9 pages of Chapter 1 titled “The Cultural Evolution of Storytelling and Fairy Tales: Human Communication and Memetics” in the 2012 e-book titled The Irresistible Fairy Tale: The Cultural and Social History of a Genre  Links to an external site.written by Jack Zipes found in the NOVA online library to gain an understanding for how fairy tales evolved and for their importance to society over many generations.
  4. Referring to the reading and to your own thinking, discuss the role fairy tales and folk tales have in society. Consider what purpose they serve and why they are timeless stories. Remember to properly cite source ideas within the text of your writing as well as in a work cited. Also, remember that a paragraph at the college level should be 7-12 sentences in length.
