Hum Ecology & Environment peer response

Callie Denham

Identify at least three significant takeaways from this course. How will you apply this knowledge to your life and career?

1. Climate change can cause hurricanes, tornados, flooding, drought, etc. These environmental concerns can end ecosystems, misplace animals, and endangered animals, and risk human health and safety.

Nurses can help advocate by doing their research to understand climate change, understand what is causing it, and how to help decrease global warming. They can use this research to inform their patients and ensure that education is being delivered to the population to help raise awareness. They can also learn about what we as individuals can do in our homes to help decrease the rise of emissions from our homes and in our community.

1. Climate change and migration correlate all the time, it’s also known as climate migration. This happens when there are extreme weather changes such as flooding, hurricanes, droughts, and fires that cause the population there to move to seek safer and sometimes warmer climates (Prange, 2022). Most climate migration occurs within a country but can also cause cross-border migration.

The role of nurse professionals in addressing environmental migrations includes helping to shift cultural competence to cultural humility. We must take the time to understand cultures and respect them and we must take it upon ourselves to learn from the past, this means we must lead by example and take the first step into caring for these patients.

1. Empathy must remain in climate education because it makes the otherwise abstract and challenging issue of climate change more relatable and human. By creating an emotional bond with the environment and all its inhabitants, including other people, empathy can motivate students to take action to slow down climate change and prepare for its effects.

As nurses, we must keep educating the younger generation on taking the data they’ve acquired and putting together alternatives to find better ways to help the environment and promote a healthier earth. Problem-solving will help them to be creative with their changes and their ideas. Allowing them to become part of the solution in their own words and use each other to brainstorm ideas will help to gain motivation and others’ opinions on the subject. Communication with each other will help them to advocate their ideas and opinions, give them something to be excited about sharing, and inspire others to help them achieve their goals.

Health promotion peer response

Kelly Streete

The course outcome I’ve decided to focus on is health promotion. The work I’ve completed in this course has taught me how important it is for health promotion; it is the process of enabling people to. increase control over, and to improve someone’s health.

A person’s community can have a major impact on their health and well-being. Eliminating health disparities, achieving health equity, and attaining health literacy to improve the health and well-being of all is the overall outcome. Proving tools for the public, creating programs to improve one’s health and community organizations that provide preventive health care services can help improve health and well-being of individuals.

This course has given me more knowledge of health promotion and how it important is.
