“Rule 3: You are who you know, your place within the group is determined by the people you associate with.
Rule 4: Intelligence and ability don’t count, there are smart people all around the circle but that doesn’t necessarily determine success in the game.
Rule 6: to win points you have to take them from someone else, they don’t like to share power.
Rule 8: the game never ends, so no one wins, the game continues beyond high school.” (Senge, 2012)
How different professional groups fit into the model
There are definitely groups in my school community, there is administration who is at the top. There are the lead teachers whether that is their official title or they have just taken on that role within their grade group. Within the teacher leaders there are groups that have been designated to be on committees to discuss different things going on in the school. Then there are the teachers who are in the middle, they will speak up if necessary this is the group that can be negative at times. Then the last group is the group of teachers that just work, they don’t say anything to anyone, don’t make waves.
The leaders of change within the school.
The leaders of change in my school are the administration and the lead teachers. They are the ones who advocate for the students and the teachers. When a teacher wants a change to occur they go to their lead and the lead goes to administration. The administration will determine if that change is beneficial, and how it will affect the entire school.
Those who attract the most attention and those who gets the least attention and why.
Those who attract the most attention are those teachers who are more active and vocal. They volunteer for extra duties and committees. Another set of teachers that get attention is the group that have a negative attitude.
Those who receive the least amount of attention are those staff members who come to work and just do their jobs. They are like the students in the class that can slip through the cracks because they are quiet and make no fuss.
The interventions that have affected a change in the school to garner more student voice.
We have an EESAC committee that meets quarterly and it includes all stake holders including a student representative. This change happened about 2 years ago. In these meetings the school improvement plan, the scores and how to teach the students are discussed. At the beginning the student didn’t speak but they have become more vocal and ask and answer questions.
Another intervention that was started last year, the principals have made themselves available for the students to meet with them to discuss anything they want to discuss. Not all students take advantage of this, the majority of the kids that do take advantage are the middle school students.
