INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE “Final Application of Knowledge”
(Exam on next page)

Imagine this writing as something that you could share with others, not a “typical college essay”. This is about your own learning; it is not a research paper. Imagine
writing answers as a blog or website for your family, friends, and your corner of social media audience.

READ CAREFULLY – including rubrics in fine print. All questions must be answered.

Due Date & SUBMISSION
Friday of Final’s week (need an extra 24-48 hours? Write & request)

“Final Application of Knowledge Exercise” folder (visible after your submission to the Restorative Justice Discussion board)

Formatting (5% with possible 2% Bonus)
Headers for sections of the exam. Block paragraphs: NO indents, single spaced with double spacing between paragraphs.

Creativity with design (images, etc.) gets a 2% bonus.
“Typical college essay formatting with double spacing and indents” loses all the formatting points.

Submissions must be .docx or pdf only.

Writing Style
Paragraphs consist of 8-10 sentences of solid content without the use of padding words (do not repeat the instructions). Structured paragraphs with good transitions.

Descriptive, personalized writing (use of “I” is encouraged. Padding words and repetition lose points.

Word Lengths
Follow guidelines in each section. More words are always welcome, not observing requirements results in point loss.

Cite the course materials
Examples: (ex: “Robbins & Dowty, p. 67” or “Environmental Justice in Chicago (1:12)” or “Slick’ems, Slick’ems, Christmas Trees and Cookie Cutters” (p. 19) or

Chapter VIII Introductory lecture (Violence and Peaceable Societies). No specific format for citations but have all info (author, date, publication or website, p.# or url)

Plagiarism will result in an automatic F – What about AI?
The submission folder is Turnitin-enabled and catches all work duplicated from the web, articles, and copies of work done on previously submitted exams.

NOTE ABOUT AI enabled essays: This exam was formatted, long ago – to reflect your own personal learning journey in order to close the door behind you and feel
successful that you have take-aways you can be proud of. This is not a “fill in the blank of what the professor wants you to know” kind of course or kind of exam. I will
be watching even more carefully than usual for references to what you have done in this class, the places you went, the films you watched, the conversations you had

with fellow students. Make sure they are visible throughout your answers. Standardized language from ChatGPT will answer the questions, but it cannot be you.

Apply words, ideas, and concepts to examples in your life, your friends, your experieces and your friendships. How did Cultural Anthropology help you think
differently about what it means to be human?

you participated in, the conversations you had with fellow students in the commenting. You must talk about how these concepts apply to your life

– your families, your jobs, your future classes, and conversation. Application to your own life must buttress all your answers.

Maximum grade 70% for answers that do reference activities, materials, and evolving thought throughout the course

Take pride in what you take away from a course.
It’s the whole point of this final “application of knowledge”.

Final Application Of Knowledge: Cultural Anthropology, Fall 2023
All parts of the exam are required. Exams without the last two categories will not be graded.

Formatting (5%)
Headers for sections of the exam. Block Paragraphs – Single spaced with no indents and space between them.

Creativity in Design & extra images = 2% bonus pts.
Zero points for “Typical College Student essay formatting”.

“My Eight Best Ideas in Anthro words”: Paragraph Answers to Language Learning
Choose eight anthropology vocabulary from the glossary (5% each) that come from at
least five different chapters in the text. Choose words that capture how your learning
about big ideas in anthropology has evolved through the course. Choose words that
illustrate concepts.

Rank them in order of importance. The last word should be the most impactful word
in your journey. [Do not use “Cultural Anthropology”]. This not for simple definitions
– answers should demonstrate turns in your ways of thinking that new words
made/make possible.

Find where each glossary word is highlighted in the text and explained at the end of
each chapter. Reread it thoroughly to understood how it is used in the text. Full
credit answers demonstrate both mastery of meaning and of application.

Write solid content. Padding words and repetition lose points. See example.
§

§ ~ Highlight or underline the word. Cite chapter and page where encountered. (Not “end of the chapter”
glossary but in text where used in context)

§ ~ Write out official definition in glossary. Put this in quotes and in a different font (italics, bold, etc.)
§ ~ Write a full paragraph on how the word helps you personally understand anthropology and

anthropology concepts. Imagine using it yourself in talking to your friends. Use descriptive
language How would you explain something about the world to someone else using this word?

Avoid these common errors: 1. Use words from at least five different chapters. 2. If using concepts such as “positive identity” and “negative identity”–
they are worth ONE word. 3. Do not use example of Interpretive Drift. 4. Padding words & repetition lose pts.

How you have learned from each other
When was your learning was impacted by another’s student’s work or point of view?
How did they help you see something from a new perspective?

Write about four different students using their work in at least four different assignments. Make
sure each student you reference is written up in a separate 6-10 sentence paragraph.

§ Student Name. Assignment Title. Date written. If available – URL from Padlet.
§ 6-10 sentence paragraph on how your perspective was influenced.
§ Detail, descriptive language, personalization of learning. Padding words & repetition lose pts.

Don’t be afraid to use “I” and speak from first person.

Ideas for Walking
Ideas are only worth the distance they can “walk”. An idea has no life unless it fuels a conversation, a
debate, a dream, a painting, a poem, an article, a blog… or makes you think for a whole bus ride – staring
out the window. Which idea would be worth asking someone else what they think? Which is the idea that
you think will “walk” with you the longest?

You will receive full credit for any serious answer of at least 300-500 words. There are no “right” or “wrong”
answers, but there are non-serious ones. Ideas should be based on experiences and learning in this class.

Creator’s Statement
Identify writing, editing, image, and software tools you used. Grammarly? Spell-checkers and editing
tools? Canva or other templates for formatting purposes? Text generators to think with – to write certain
portions that you then edited for your own thinking? If you used ChatGPT, cite it as required by University
Academic policies. It is to your credit to name skills and sources in using the tools for writing and to your
advantage to emphasize the role of your own creativity, agency, and learning in this course.
