What is the purpose of IPT? 

According to the video, Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) is a time-limited psychotherapeutic approach that focuses on improving a person’s interpersonal relationships and addressing emotional difficulties that are often rooted in those relationships. It listed 3 stages of IPT to be assessment, middle and end stage with 4 sections of 50 minutes on each stage. According to the video, the main purpose of IPT is to ease psychological distress symptoms by enhancing interpersonal functioning and communication. Here are some key purposes and goals of Interpersonal Psychotherapy: 

Addressing Relationship Issues: IPT aims to help individuals identify and understand the ways in which their relationships contribute to their emotional struggles. This includes exploring conflicts, unresolved issues, and patterns of communication. 

Alleviating Psychological Symptoms: IPT is particularly effective in treating mood disorders such as depression and anxiety. By improving interpersonal functioning, individuals often experience a reduction in symptoms as they gain better ways of managing stress and emotional challenges. 

Enhancing Social Support: The therapy encourages individuals to build and strengthen their social support networks, which can provide emotional support and a sense of belonging. 

The population that benefits from IPT based on the Video. 

Depression: The video recommends IPT for patients or individuals with depression. IPT is recognized as one of the evidence-based treatments for depression. It is worth knowing that “Family-based interpersonal psychotherapy (FB-IPT) is an evidence-based psychosocial intervention for depression in preadolescents (ages 8-12 years).” (Dietz, 2020). It can help individuals who are struggling with symptoms of depression, such as low mood, loss of interest, changes in sleep and appetite, and feelings of hopelessness. 

 Grief and Loss: Grief and loss can have a significant impact on a person’s emotional well-being. IPT can assist individuals in navigating the complex emotions and life changes associated with the loss of a loved one. Ann’s interpersonal model in the video identified with me, and I watched it repeatedly.  

Real Life Transitions: Major life changes such as marriage, divorce, retirement, or relocation can create emotional challenges. IPT can provide coping strategies and emotional support during these transitions. 

 Interpersonal sensitivities: Individuals facing difficulties in their relationships, whether with family members, friends, or romantic partners, can benefit from IPT. The therapy helps them improve communication and address conflicts.  

       In conclusion, Interpersonal psychotherapy is a short-term, focused treatment for depression. Studies have shown that IPT, which addresses interpersonal issues, may be at least as effective as short-term treatment with antidepressants for mild to moderate forms of clinical depression.” (Casarella, 2022). The purpose of Interpersonal Psychotherapy is to help individuals develop healthier ways of relating to others, manage their emotions, and improve their overall well-being by addressing the interpersonal factors that contribute to their psychological distress
