Acelero Learning

Mission: We design and deliver inclusive, anti-bias, and rigorous approaches to eliminate the gaps between young children’s inherent potential and their achievement in school and life. With our partners, we accelerate child and family outcomes
that honor the aspirations and cultures of the communities we serve.

Services and Clientele: Acelero Learning is a pioneering provider of early childhood education and family engagement services for thousands of Head Start children and families across the country.

Helping children enter school ready to learn and overcome developmental challenges.

Family Support Advocate (Family Social Worker):  Primary role is to engage families to partner with us to promote children’s healthy development and school readiness. In their specialized role, the Family Support Advocate will provide individualized, intensive support to the most vulnerable families in our Head Start program.

Families on the Family Support Advocates’ caseloads will include families experiencing a significant crisis, families who are recently homeless or whose children are in foster care, as well as families impacted by substance abuse, family violence, or mental health concerns.

What brought you to this role? I have always had a passion for helping others who felt as if they did not have a voice and needed someone to advocate for them. It all started in high school when I had my internship at The Hunger Task Force and just seeing how many people, we were serving with food boxes, especially around the holidays. I continued volunteering while in college to receive my bachelors in social work at a daycare center and just seeing the children be so happy when new faces arrived. After graduation I thought I was done with school, but I had a calling and it led me to pursue my master’s degree in social work. Everyone who feels they are alone needs someone to advocate for them. I have a deeper connection with social workers as I have a son who was born at 29 weeks and while in the hospital, I had a social worker come and talk with me just in case things were to take an unexpected turn.

Overall job satisfaction: My overall job satisfaction on a scale of 1-5 would be a 3 and I personally feel like there is more that I could be doing to help the children they we serve. I love what I do but I know that god has something bigger in stored for me and I just need to look elsewhere in order for that to happen.

Opportunity for advancement: The job does have opportunities for advancement, but it all depends on the degree or experience that you have, to do the job. It is hard to grow within the company because they have favorites and tend to always go towards the experience and not the ones with the degree.  I continue to make sure that I am staying current with all my certification and continuing to build knowledge that surrounds social work, rather that is me browsing the web or volunteering and asking the staff questions.

Selfcare: Some strategies that I use for selfcare are visiting my son downstairs on the nursery as he is the apple of my world. I also walk around the building to clear my head if a lot has happened that day. I enjoy talking with my friends as we all help each other out due to everyone having a degree in social work. One of my favorite things to do is scroll on TikTok to look at something funny. I really don’t get my nails done but when I do I enjoy going to the spa.

Reflection

I really enjoyed this establishment, and this exact position of social work. Most of this job consisted of helping families with resources that they may need to make it in their daily lives. I can see how this job can be and feel rewarding when you are assisting families, and you can measure their process. For example, they assist families who are homeless. They offer resources to companies that help with housing approvals and deposits, they help with making sure the family is taking advantage that they qualify for to make sure that they can get in a more stable environment.

This role could have been this special for me, because when my son was in preschool, everyone was assigned to a Family Advocate, and although there were not many challenges that I was facing she was able to help me out a lot. It was a requirement for my child to go to the dentist, and I had no dental insurance, she was able to help me find an “income based” dentist that did cleanings and dental work and charged based on your income. She also helped me with goals for school progressive with my undergrad degree.

 Social Work Values and Ethics

When it comes to the values and ethics service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, and importance of human relations I believe this agency displayed and practiced them all and it was very evident. The families of this school is being treated with the upmost respect. They are getting one on one attention and access to all the resources that is known, and they are not being talked down to or upon.

Cultural Awareness and Social Justice

Cultural awareness and social justice was not anything that I could see while I was there, but looking at all the documents that the families fill out for the Family Advocate, and I do believe that with the options and resources given they do take culture into consideration.
