The CSLO I chose to reflect on demonstrates the use of technology and scholarly resources to develop professional communication skills. I have accomplished this through the mentor interview and PowerPoint presentation. Having the interview helped me leave my comfort zone and interact with a fellow peer that I wouldn’t have usually. Putting the presentation together was also out of my comfort zone. Researching and using technology in my weekly discussions will help me, in the future, always to investigate information that I am not familiar with. I found the library resources easy to navigate and user-friendly. It didn’t seem like such a daunting chore the more I used it and got familiar with it. Communication skills are not easy to come by. The most important part of being able to communicate is being a good listener. I have already started using this in my work daily by trying to be a better listener. Communication is such an essential part of our day in nursing. We must develop skills to communicate effectively with doctors, patients, coworkers, and other healthcare staff. As I move forward in this BSN program, I plan to become a better listener for my patients, family members, and coworkers. This will enable me to be a better nurse for my patients!

Hi Ruth Ann,

I can relate to your assessment of going out of one’s comfort zone, for I, too, felt that I had to do this when we did the mentor interview, the PowerPoint presentation, and the video role-playing assignments. I am a complete introvert, and I never imagined I would be doing these kinds of activities, but I am glad I did. I learned that for us to be a better leaders, we have to do things out of our comfort zone and that for us to communicate effectively, these activities will help us. I am also in awe of the resources available to us with just a mouse click. What used to take me weeks back in the 90s to achieve as far as research projects I can now do in less than half the time. I feel that technology has advanced, and we can be whatever we want to be if we take that first step. I wish you much luck as you continue your BSN journey.
