EXAMPLE

Identify and describe two traits of strong research questions.

Good questions for research have specificity, clarity, relevance, testability, and ethical considerations ( Barroga & Matanguihan, 2022). The studies establish connections with established theoretical frameworks, have well-defined research aims, and hold substantial relevance to the specific field. They also demonstrate feasibility and the potential for quantifiable outcomes. Their guidance facilitates the research process and plays a significant role in enhancing the understanding of the topic. Two traits of strong research questions are that the question or questions are testable and measurable.

Testable: Research questions can be tried and answered in the real world by research ( Saesen et al., 2023). They should not be just academic or hypothetical. An essential component of the research process is a testable research question. It is a guide for developing research questions, gathering information, and coming to findings. To effectively support empirical inquiry, it must satisfy the requirements mentioned earlier.

Measurable: The question should produce outcomes or variables that can be measured or scored using the right tools and methods. A measurable research question is well-defined, observable, and quantifiable. It guides a research study, allowing researchers to collect and analyze data to address the question’s specific issues.

Ask any questions you have about the traits of strong research questions.

Can a research question be changed as the study goes on?

Are research questions only in a question format?

Sophia,

thanks for sharing your discussion. Much appreciated. Going to work with everyone on this for this week. Try filling this out and I will help you with alignment. Greg

Although the aforementioned researchers illuminates important findings regarding (insert  your topic), I have not found research that has examined (insert your gap that has not been researched). Given such, further research is warranted that could examine (insert your gap again word for word as you did above) in an effort to address the documented problem…. (complete the sentence and cite the problem).

The purpose of this (insert method and design) study is to (complete the sentence). Then follow up with what population and theory you will use as the lens for your study.

Then provide a research question (RQ) that only aligns with your singular purpose of study.

Although the aforementioned researchers regarding the challenges of finding affordable housing for homeless individuals working in the food industry illuminates important findings, I have found no research that has examined addressing the issues causing homelessness among food service workers. Given such, further research is warranted that could examine addressing the issues causing homelessness among food service workers in an effort to address the documented problem of a lack of affordable housing (Rosenberg, 2023).

The purpose of this qualitative generic design study is to examine the factors that impede employed individuals in the food industry from finding housing. The mission is to understand, advocate for, and implement solutions that enable and empower this working homeless population to secure reliable housing, improve their overall well-being, and achieve sustainable self-sufficiency to address the challenges faced by employed individuals who lack stable housing.

Research question: What impact does employment in the food industry have on stability, well-being, and exit strategies for those who are homeless?

Hi Dr. Hickman,

I changed my research question to, “What are the factors that support employed individuals in the food industry’s search for housing?”
