I want to expose myself and let everyone know what my preconceived ideas were about this process. I assumed researchers wrote a great proposal and pitched the same to potential funding institutions and/or sponsors. For the purpose of acquiring financial support as well as IRB approval. I was so wrong.

After reading articles watching the video provided in the weekly resources, I began to understand what an “
RFP” is. This changed everything about my assumptions and perspective regarding the process. This epiphany in no way makes me any closer to being an expert however this does clear up some misconceptions. The following three links are not directly connected to the ethnography study I wish to conduct however there is vital secondary data that can be derived from these institutions, links, and/or organization(s).

            The announcement posted by the USAID (U.S. Agency for International Development) in conjunction with the APCC Alliance APS the presents objectives outlined in the U.S. Government (USG) Advancing Protection and Care for Children in Adversity Strategy. The USG has a commitment and approach to investing in the development, care, dignity, and of vulnerable children and their families. My project idea, activities to support and retain foster parents aligns with the announcement’s focus on vulnerable children and their families. Supporting and retaining foster parents will enable the foster parents to remain licensed and maintain children in their homes until the children are reunited with their parents or another permanent plan is approved by the court. 2. The Bush Foundation: The Community Innovation Grant

(For the purpose of applying for this grant, I am living in Minnesota) The Community Innovation Grant focuses on developing and testing ideas to solve problems and create opportunity, and then spread the ideas across communities.

Applications are accepted year-round.

            My project idea, activities to support and retain foster parents aligns with the foundation’s focus on making the region better for everyone. In my proposal I will address who has the power and key stakeholders.  I will partner with a private agency and surrounding local agencies who are also seeking to be proactive in supporting and retaining foster parents.  The proposal will also present a focus on kinship providers.  The target population will make special effort to include Black people, Indigenous people, and people from rural communities. I will follow the recommendation of the Community Toolbox (n.d) by communicating with the Bush Foundation about my work periodically.

3. The Melon Foundation: Humanities in Place

I did not see a published closing date for RFPs. 

            I consider the Melon Foundation to be a prominent and well-known grantor. My project idea, the support and retention of foster parents is aligned with the foundation’s quest to work with innovative rethinking of past practice.  The past practice of supporting and retaining foster parents is not working. My ideas and those of my partner, a private foster home licensing agency will spring forth fresh ideas that will celebrate the work that foster parents put forth for children placed in their homes and their efforts to participate in shared parenting requirements. This will include a visual recording of foster parents and families who have reunited with their children.  The RPF will follow the four pieces of the proposal; 1. Information on the proposed grant and organization. 2. A proposal narrative document that provides detailed information on the proposed work.  3. Supplemental documents. 4. A budget and budget description outlining how funds would be spent.   The Community Toolbox (n.d.) recommends that applicants for grants determine if they have the needed time, energy, and other resources to prepare an effective grant application.  Although there isn’t a published closing date, I and my partner agency can set a deadline for completing the proposal tasks.

Project Idea:

The need for an accredited counseling program in Allendale, SC, and surrounding areas to provide mental health counseling training in the low country’s rural areas due to the high demands of therapeutic services and training opportunities is more than an hour away.

The approach that I chose to search for grants was a Google search with the keywords Grants for Educating New Counselors 2023. I went to the Federal Grants for Counseling link, but those grants were outdated by a few years, so I went to Grants.gov and narrowed my search to behavioral and health. Then, I clicked nonprofits that do not have a 501 (c) (3) status, others, and small businesses. Next, education. Finally, all departments of education and all health and human services.

RFP 1:

The first RFP is an ed grant through the Department of Education. The purpose is to identify, support, and rigorously evaluate evidence-based and innovative strategies and activities to improve and modernize career and technical education and ensure workforce skills are taught. This grant aligns with my project idea because the goal is to promote behavior change by providing education to new counselors in rural areas. The grant is funded by the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006 and then amended by the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act, which aligns with the labor market needs.

RFP 2:

The second RFP is a grant through the Department of Health and Human Services and the NIH that the purpose is to leverage social networks to promote behavior change. This grant aligns with my project idea because the initiative focuses on planning activities to target interpersonal change. The activities include team building, protocol development, piloting of systems for data collection, staff training, and documentation procedures. The NIH funds this grant and is focusing on pre-trial planning and development, which my idea is in the beginning stages.

RFP 3:

The last RFP is also an NIH grant. The purpose is to conduct a needs assessment to create a plan of action to meet the identified needs. This grant is intended to serve historically underrepresented populations in the health and science field, including social and behavioral sciences. The NIH recognizes the importance of diversity in bringing a wide range of skills, viewpoints, perspectives, creativity, and individual enterprise to address complex scientific problems.

This process taught me how to narrow my search, so it wasn’t overwhelming. It was helpful to create an idea for a project and why it is needed for my community. I searched for grants before starting the program at Walden but stepped back because I did not understand the process. However, the process is long in that the directions must be followed precisely, or my application will be rejected.
