ELL Classroom Activity Critique

Select and post one of the five activities you have developed for this course for your classmates to review and critique.

Guided Response:  Review and respond to at least two of classmates’ activities/lesson plans.  Offer a critique of their activity.  Consider the effectiveness of the lesson. Does it make sense?  Will it be effective? How will you know?  Additionally, offer one suggestion for improvement.  Use your textbook, course references, and knowledge of teaching language acquisition to create your response. Also, be sure to respond to any questions from your instructor.

Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses.

Integrating English Language Acquisition

Analyze the ways in which English second language acquisition can be integrated into the K-12 school curriculum, a pre-school curriculum, an adult education curriculum, or a corporate training curriculum.  Provide an analysis of the ways in which English second language acquisition can be integrated into your selected setting/curriculum. Be sure to offer a research-based explanation for your response.  Include support for your ideas from the text, the research, course materials, and/or their own experiences.  Please be sure to cite your sources.

Guided Response:  Students should also respond to at least two classmates, as well as respond to any questions from classmates and the instructor.

Week 6 – Final Project

ELL Interview

For the final assignment, you will record an interview with an ELL student, ELL parent, or ELL teacher.  Use an internet-based recording program, such as YouTube, YouTube Video Editor, or Audacity to record your interview.  If you are unable to record an interview due to individual circumstances, as an alternative you may view the following video: From an ELL Student to an ELL Educator (8:49).  If you record an interview, please be sure to include an interview transcript and a link to the recorded interview.

Create a set of five to ten open-ended interview questions based on the content and learning objectives of this course and centered on two primary themes:

  1. What is challenging about learning English?, and
  2. What would help students to better learn English?

In your assignment, be sure to include information from at least five scholarly sources in addition to the text.

In your assignment, address the following:

  1. Describe your interview subject.
  2. Summarize the interview (include the interview questions in an appendix).
  3. Discuss the implications for teachers in meeting the challenges in learning English as described by the interview subject.
  4. Describe potential classroom teaching approaches to addressing these implications.

You have two options for presenting your findings:

Option One: Presentation

Create a five- to eight-minute professional development presentation for your future faculty colleagues in which you present the interview information in an audio-visual format.

Use one of the following web-based tools to create your presentation:

  1. Audacity
  2. Jing
  3. Total Recorder
  4. Parallels Desktop for Mac
  5. Oracle VirtualBox
  6. Koyote
  7. Video Capture Software
  8. YouTube
  9. YouTube Video Editor

Your presentation should incorporate audio/visual tools to help you convey your ideas.  Remember to also include a transcript of your completed video.  Then, include a link to the presentation and a link to the recorded interview on a MS Word document before you upload your assignment for submission.

Option Two: Paper

Conduct the interview and then write an eight- to ten-page paper, not including the title and reference page.  The paper will formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.  Include a link to the recorded interview before you upload your assignment for submission.

Carefully review the Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your assignment.
